Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
Scene from Sodegaura koi no Harusame, 1861

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene from the play " Sodegaura koi no Harusame" of Hanaya Tokubei at left scratching his head as he looks up at his wife, Ofusa, with an angry scowl. The beauty smiles happily back at him as she carries a large wooden tub filled with what looks like beans. At right, Nakano Shozaburo sits next to a hibachi with a kettle resting atop the coals, frowning unhappily. Woodblock prints decorate the low folding screen behind him, including portraits of samurai. The home is shabby with cracked and missing plaster on the walls and rips in the shoji panel at right. From left, the actors are Bando Hikosaburo V, Iwai Kumesaburo III, and Kataoka Nizaemon VIII. Nice expressive figures.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 14 3/8" x 29 1/8"

Condition - This print with nice color and detail as shown. Three separate panels. Slight separation at ends of vertical folds at sides, repaired. A couple small spots. Please see photos for details.
