Comments - Handsome scene from the kabuki play commonly known as "Kagamiyama." A senior lady-in-waiting, Iwafuji plotted the downfall of her junior, Onoe, by exchanging a sandal for a valuable statue in Onoe's care. Here, Iwafuji creates a scene after discovering the sandal in place of the statue. She holds the sandal in her extended hand, waving it accusingly at the meek Onoe, who kneels quietly in the center. Onoe's loyal young maid, Ohatsu, watches from behind a screen at left, unhappy at the ill-treatment of her mistress. A great illustration from this well-known play with fine color and detail in the expressive figures and elegant palace setting.
