Original Hiroshige (1797 - 1858) Japanese Woodblock Print
Matching the World and Music, 1849 - 1850

Comments - An extremely rare triptych by Hiroshige featuring depictions of thirteen different joruri or ballad dramas, combined into one design. At upper right, a magic fox disguised as the samurai Sato Tadanobu leaps through the air outside a county home. At bottom center, the lovely Heron Maiden wears a white kimono and hood, and carries an umbrella. Just to the right, the two brothers Jihizo and Yokozo fight after Jihizo finds a box buried by their deceased father, which contains his secrets of military strategy, while digging bamboo shoots for his mother. A terrific design packed with detail. Only the second time we've seen this subject.
