Five Street Knights, 1899

Comments - Terrific kabuki triptych depicting five chivalrous commoners, otokodate or "street knights" who supposedly protected local people from outlaw samurai. The men wear an array of impressive kimono with striking designs, including a dragon, a compass and anchor, a fierce hawk, a biwa or lute, and twinkling stars above swirling clouds. Each has a towel casually draped over a shoulder or tied around the neck, and each carries a large umbrella patterned with writing. A lively design with large expressive figures, vibrant color, and a simulated black lacquer frame.
