Original Kunichika (1835 - 1900) Japanese Woodblock Print
Narihira Reizo Attacking Kurikara Denji, 1868

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene of the commoner Kurikara Denji at right raising a bamboo pole above his head as he attacks Narihira Reizo. Denji frowns worriedly as Reizo stares back at him with an evil grin, gripping the blade of a sword wrapped in cloth in one hand. Reizo may be preparing to commit ritual suicide. The beauty at left tilts her head and smiles slyly as she watches the men out of the corners of her eyes. From left, the actors are Sawamura Tanosuke, Ichimura Kakitsu, and Bando Kamezo. Nice expressive figures set against a deep blue night sky.
