Kanagawa: Panoramic View from Kanagawadai toward Yokohama Honmaku; Spear Carrier from the Ofudamaki Festival, 1854 - Intriguing image from a Hiroshige and Toyokuni III collaborative series known as "The Tokaido by Two Brushes." In the foreground, a waitress kneels next to a palanquin with a tray holding a cup of tea. She smiles over her shoulder a she watches a spear carrier during the Ofudamaki Festival at Yasaka Shrine in Totsuka, near Kanagawa. The annual festival involves men dressing as women for good luck and handing out ofuda or talismans, so the spear carrier wears a woman's wig adorned with ribbons as he strolls along, enjoying a snack from a wooden pick in his hand. The seascape by Hiroshige above shows a view from Kanagawadai toward Yokohama Honmaku, with larger ships and smaller boats moving along the shoreline. An interesting subject.
