A Fuji Arts Special Offer Auction

Chunagon Kanesuke (Fujiwara no Kanesuke), Poet No. 27 - Wonderful scene from the tale of the Fox Lady, Kuzunoha, a magic fox who transformed herself into a beauty to marry the hunter who had saved her life, Abe no Yasuno. Together they had a child, but the little boy caught sight of his mother in her true fox form, so she decided she must go away and return to life in the wild. Here, the boy runs after her with outstretched hands as she begins to leave, her form disappearing into the grasses below. She hides her face from him behind her upraised kimono sleeve, saddened that they must part. The poem by featured poet Chunagon Kanesuke (Fujiwara no Kanesuke) reads:

Over Mika's plain,
Gushing forth and flowing free,
Is Izumi's stream.
I do not know if we have met:
Why, then, do I long for her?
