Comments - Terrific kabuki scene "Ishibashiyama Gunki" at the Meijiza or Meiji Theater depicting the great leader Minamoto no Yoritomo and a few of his men hiding in a hollow tree following his defeat at the Battle of Ishibashiyama. Surrounded by enemy forces, his spy among the Taira, Kajiwara Kagetoki, stands in the center, diverting Yoritomo's pursuers away from the hiding place. At left, a Taira warrior scowls angrily as he looks up at Kagetoki. At upper left, two startled birds fly up into the night sky. A great design from this famous tale, with large figures and a striking natural setting.
