Outside a Courtyard at New Year's, 1847 - 1852

Comments - Attractive kabuki scene of a trio waiting outside the entrance to a courtyard at New Year's. The beauty in the center grins happily as she looks back over her shoulder at her companion, one hand resting atop a purse wrapped in tissues tucked into her obi. Her black kimono features a design of crows in flight, lined with a gray print of white egrets, the two birds symbolizing good and evil. The young man at right watches the couple with a slightly worried smile, his eyes wide. A sacred shimenawa rope hangs above the doorway, which is flanked with traditional decorations of pines. An interesting subject with a handsomely detailed setting.
