Sumo Wrestlers Onigadake and Akitsushima at a Tea Stand, 1850

Comments - Great kabuki scene of two sumo wrestlers at a tea stand outside a shrine. In the center, Onigadake throws out his hand with an angry grimace, gripping the scabbard of his sword. At left, the wrestling referee Shokuro stares back at him with a frown, his arms folded firmly across his chest and tucked into the sleeves of his robe. At right, Akitsushima watches the confrontation with a worried expression, lifting the edge of his kimono with one hand, a towel draped over his shoulder. A stone fence runs across the background against the night sky. From left, the across are Seki Sanjuro III, Arashi Yoshisaburo III, and Ichimura Uzaemon XII. A terrific image with expressive figures, a striking setting, and wonderful detail in the fabric patterns.
