Bando Mitsugoro as the Courtesan Matsuyama, 1869

Comments - Interesting kabuki portrait of Bando Mitsugoro as the courtesan Matsuyama on a winter day, looking suspiciously out of the corners of her eyes, the edge of her scarf caught between her teeth. She tucks one hand into the front of her blue kimono, which is patterned with delicate leaves and swirling currents of water. Snow falls heavily through the sky, the beauty sheltered by an umbrella. An expressive figure.
