Eavesdropping on a Beauty in Bed, 1852

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene of a beauty sitting atop a bed with a heavy, furry black kimono draped over her shoulders and a pipe in one hand. She looks down at her companion with a wary expression, while the beauty at right leans forward with an eager smile. A lamp rests on the floor behind her alongside a folding screen decorated with a phoenix in flight beneath a blossoming cherry tree. At left, a man eavesdrops outside the door, frowning angrily with his hands tucked into his sleeves. A handsome design.
