Series; Four Famous Wise Men of the Theater (Meiyu Shikunshi)

Four Famous Wise Men of the Theater - This bold kabuki portrait comes from a series of okubi-e or large head portraits of actors in the popular play "Sugawara denju tenerai kagami," which features three triplets named Matsuomaru (Pine), Umeomaru (Plum), and Sakuramaru (Cherry). The brothers become the victims of divided loyalties after Matsuomaru's treacherous employer, Shihei falsely accuses the calligrapher and courtier Kan Shojo (Sugawara no Michizane) of plotting against the emperor. Kan Shojo was the sponsor of the triplets, so Sakuramaru and Umeomaru are loyal to him. These fantastic designs are beautifully composed and detailed with exceptionally fine line work in the hair and vibrant color. Some images feature deluxe treatments such as burnishing or embossing. Don't miss this opportunity to acquire a striking okubi-e design by Kunichika.

Special detail - Burnishing on the hair, embossing on the white cord around the topknot, a dusting of mica on the background.
