Ichikawa Danjuro VIII as Kasugaya Tokijiro and Ichimura Uzaemon XIII as Midori, 1851

Comments - Handsome kabuki scene featuring Ichikawa Danjuro VIII as Kasugaya Tokijiro and Ichimura Uzaemon XIII as his daughter, Midori. Tokijiro has climbed over a fence to rescue his lover, the Yoshiwara courtesan Urazato. The beauty's employer and his wife tied her up in the snowy courtyard and beat her after discovering her affair with the young man. Here, he fastens the white cloth around his head as he stands barefoot in the snow, the young girl smiling happily at his appearance. At right, broken bamboo spears that has topped the black lacquer fence can be seen. Snow falls heavily through the gray sky, blanketing the blossoming plum tree above. An attractive design with a nicely detailed setting.
