The 47 Ronin at Ryogoku Bridge, 1847 - 1850 by Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861)

Original Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861) Japanese Woodblock Print
The 47 Ronin at Ryogoku Bridge, 1847 - 1850

Comments - Interesting scene of the famous 47 Ronin returning victorious from the night attack on Moronao's mansion. As the sun begins to rise, they make their way across the snow-covered Ryogoku Bridge back into town, still carrying their spears and weapons. They are stopped by a hatamoto mounted on horseback and carrying a spear, who forbids them from passing into his master's province. Instead, the warriors were forced to backtrack and cross the river by the Eitai Bridge. A soft orange glow spreads along the horizon as birds flit through the sky. The text panel at upper right reads "Early in the morning of the 15th day of the 12th month, 1702, the 47 loyal retainers, having achieved their goal, all crossed Ryogoku Bridge with the head of their enemy and proceeded to the memorial temple."
