Comments - Terrific depiction of the famous duel between Uesugi Kenshin and Takeda Shingen during the Battle of Kawanakajima. At left, Kenshin gallops into the enemy camp on a dappled horse, swinging his sword at his enemy in a surprise attack. Seated on a stool in the center, Shingen deftly thrusts out his iron battle fan to deflect the blow. Shingen wears a magnificent battle helmet topped with a horned demon and flowing white wig, giving him an imposing appearance. The battle rages all around with a samurai on foot at right thrusting his spear at Shingen, while behind him, a warrior monk on horseback sends several enemies flying overhead with a sweeping motion of his weapon, the hapless men tumbling head over heels through the air. The fight continues on the opposite shore of the river with troops seen in silhouette. A great dramatic image with wonderful detail in the expressive figures, armor, and weapons.
