Metal for Tooth-blackening - Interesting scene of an upper-class beauty blackening her teeth, an indication of married status. She looks carefully into a hand mirror, examining her reflection as she dips a brush into a mixture of dye made from iron filings and tea or gallnut. Another woman leans over her, carrying a basin with another set of materials for tooth blackening. Each wears a white kimono tucked into full red pants, the folds of fabric spreading out onto the floor behind the women. Colorful fabric curtains hang at right, with a gate at left with enormous black lacquer hinges and fittings. An intriguing look at this beauty routine, nicely composed and detailed. Includes metallic pigment that has oxidized to a dark tone on the white kimono. A rarely seen Yoshitoshi beauty series.
