Comments - Handsome kabuki scene of actors under a blossoming plum tree at New Year's. The fellow at left carries a branch over his shoulder decorated with lucky symbols for the holiday, including a turnip and a target with an arrow through it. He smiles as he looks back at his companion, who frowns unhappily, carrying a bouquet wrapped in paper. The beauty at right looks up with a grin as she lifts the hem of her robe. Each panel features a circular inset with a portrait, including a princess wearing an elegant headdress topped with a golden phoenix played by Ichimura Uzaemon XIII at upper left. The inset in the right panel features Seki Sanjuro III and the beauty is Bando Shuka I. An attractive design, nicely detailed.
