Regrets on the First Morning After, 1860 - Attractive scene from the classic "Tale of Genji" of the young nobleman taking leave from his sweetheart in the morning. He stands on the walkway at left, smiling as he looks back, his sword bearer kneeling behind him. The young beauty kneels in the center, shyly biting the sleeve of her kimono as she looks down, a black lacquer basin and pitcher on the floor before her. A small towel hangs from a stand at right, and a comb and hairpin rest nearby. A matron in a black floral robe emerges from the bedroom at right, waving her hand solicitously. A handsome design with lovely detail in the palace setting, furnishings, and fabrics. Includes burnishing on the basin.
