Visiting a Shrine, 1881

Comments - Handsome kabuki triptych showing a young beauty, a samurai, and a yakko or footman visiting a shrine at night. The beauty smiles as she looks over her shoulder, a closed fan in her hand. The samurai stares back at her with a worried expression as he holds a purple robe draped over his shoulder. A purple sash is tied around his forehead, with the hair on the side of his head sticking out and longer locks falling over his shoulders. The servant waits at left carrying his master's swords, frowning at the beauty, one hand thrown out at his side. A red fence enclosing the temple grounds runs across the background, with a torii gate at right and a blossoming cherry tree framing evening sky. Beautifully colored and detailed, with light embossing on the white kimono collar and folding fan, and burnishing on the yakko's black robe.
