Original Kunisada III (1848 - 1920) Japanese Woodblock Print
Princess Minazuru and Torazo

Comments - Handsome kabuki scene from the play commonly known as "Kiichi Hogen." The young Ushiwakamaru (the future Minamoto no Yoshitsune) disguised himself as yakko or footman in the daimyo Kiichi Hogen's household in the hopes of stealing the elderly samurai's famous books of military strategy. Hogen's daughter, Princess Minazuru has fallen in love with Torazo, unaware of his true identity. Here, she turns her head away with a wry smile, wearing a red kimono patterned with cranes and tie-dyed patches, her hair adorned with clusters of flowers and ribbons. Torazo crouches at her side, pushing up the sleeve of his robe with a nervous expression. Nice expressive figures. Includes a dusting of mica on the background.
