Original Kunichika (1835 - 1900) Japanese Woodblock Print
Martial Arts Practice, 1888

Comments - Lively depiction of men practicing martial arts with wooden swords. The fellow in the center grips his weapon overhead with both hands as the man at left thrusts his sword at him. Two other men with swords have tumbled to the floor below him, while a third man behind him covers his eyes with both hands in a frightened manner. At upper right, a beauty smiles as she peers between the sliding panels, and additional swords, a face mask, and gloves hand on the wall nearby. An intriguing kabuki subject with a nicely detailed setting.
