Actors Visiting a Shrine, 1851 - 1852 by Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861)

Original Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861) Japanese Woodblock Print
Actors Visiting a Shrine, 1851 - 1852

Comments - Interesting group portrait of kabuki actors offstage, paying a visit to a shrine in their leisure time. The man at far left holds a pipe in his hand as he looks back at his companions with a worried expression. Behind him, a thatched roof structure holds an altar before a hanging scroll, and a monk peers out the window. At bottom center a young girl tugs at the end of a blue and white sash held by the beauty behind her, who smiles with amusement. Banners hang from poles overhead at right, with large paper lanterns sheltered beneath a black lacquer roof. Nice interaction between the expressive figures. A handsome design.

Artist - Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861)

Image Size - 13 7/8" x 29 1/2"

Condition - This print with nice detail as shown. Three attached panels, backed with paper. Slight separation at ends of vertical folds between panels, repaired. A few creases. Please see photos for details.
