Series; The Popularity of the Upstairs (Fringe) Dressing Room

Ichikawa Danjuro IX, 1883 - Handsome portrait of Ichikawa Danjuro in his upstairs dressing room before a performance. He wears a blue and white kimono patterned with the three concentric rice measure crest of the Ichikawa Danjuro line of actors, a folding fan in his hand. At left, a silhouetted assistant gestures at a note in his hand, while at upper right, the hands of a dressed prepare to set a wig on the actor's head. A terrific design from this great Kunichika series, offering a rare peek backstage at the kabuki theater.
