Kawarazaki Gonjuro I as Yamamoto Kansuke and Bando Hikosaburo V as Naoe Yamashiro, 1863 - Interesting kabuki double portrait of Kawarazaki Gonjuro I as Yamamoto Kansuke and Bando Hikosaburo Vas Naoe Yamashiro, two retainers of rival daimyo. At bottom left, Kansuke is a famous military strategist for Lord Takeda Shingen of Kai Province. He looks up with a stern frown at Yamashiro, who serves Nagao Terutora, the lord of Echigo Province. The agitated Yamashiro grimaces angrily, clutching a white banner with one hand, his other thrown out in alarm beside him. His hair sticks out wildly around his head, with loose wisps framing his face, and his red stage makeup adds to his daunting appearance. A great image of these two warriors, detailed with a simulated black lacquer frame and light cloth embossing on the white banner.
