Comments - Great kabuki scene from the play "Hatsumoto Yui Soga no Kyodai" of the great Heike warrior Kagekiyo in front of the cave where he had been imprisoned by the Genji following the Battle of Dan-no-ura. In the center, he strikes an unusual pose, stiffing atop a stool with his arms folded firmly across his chest, the sleeves of his kimono sticking out like wings. At upper left, the Genji commander Chichibu Shigetada looks down with a frown, his retainer Kajiwara Kagetoki kneeling at his side. At right, Kagekiyo's mistress Akoya looks up with a smile while Shigetada's retainer Iwanaga Munetsura reaches for his sword. From left, Otani Tomoemon IV, Ichikawa Danjuro VIII, Onoe Kikujiro I, and Ichikawa Kodanji IV. A striking design with a dramatic setting.
