Comments - Terrific kabuki group portrait of an opening ceremony of at the Chitose-za or Chitose Theater, depicting the characters from a play about the famous Soga Brothers, who vow to avenge their father's death at the hands of the nobleman Suketsune. Here, the young samurai announce their intentions to their father's murderer, Suketsune, during a party to celebrate the New Year. From left, the actors are Kataoka Gado as Hachiman no Saburo, Nakamura Fukusuke as the beauty Shosho, Onoe Kikugoro as Soga Juro, Ichikawa Danjuro as Soga Goro, Nakamura Shikan as Kudo Saemon Suketsune, Ichikawa Sadanji as Asahina Saburo, Onoe [?] as the courtesan Oiso no Tora, and Ichikawa Kuzo as Sho Tota. A handsome design with fine detail in the expressive figures and vibrant color, along with a banzuke or list of actors and roles above.
