Original Kunisada III (1848 - 1920) Japanese Woodblock Print
Scene from the Subscription List

Comments - Handsome kabuki scene from the popular play "The Subscription List" (Kanjincho), the story of Minamoto no Yoshitsune and his men attempting to flee cross the border disguised as monks to evade Yoshitsune's brother, Yoshitomo. The aristocrat Togashi, shown at right in a blue kamishimo patterned with cranes, is charged with intercepting the party. Togashi suspects that the young monk in the pink robe at left is Yoshitsune (and actually is). Pine branches frame the red sky above. From left, the actors are Iwai Hanshiro, Ichikawa Kodanji, and Ichikawa Sadanji. Beautifully detailed with burnishing on the Togashi's black court cap. A bold design with large colorful figures.
