Series; An Assortment of Beauties of the Highest Popularity in Temporary Quarters in Fukagawa
Beauty with a Pipe, 1865 - Attractive portrait of a kamuro or child apprentice handing a letter to a courtesan in temporary quarters in Fukagawa. The beauty bens over with a smile, holding a sleeve to her chin as she holds her kimono closed with her other hand. Her purple robe depicts a scene from the popular Noh play "Hagoromo," a tale about a Tennin, a heavenly Buddhist spirit, who accidentally leaves her magic feather robe hanging on a pine tree, where a priest finds it. The room opens onto a garden with a stone lantern among leafy shrubs. A charming design from a rarely seen series.
