Comments - Intriguing print depicting scenes from various kabuki plays as displayed on placards or signboards hung on a wooden framework with a checked canopy covering them. The sign at left shows a young woman eagerly offering a drawstring bag to an elegant courtesan, who looks down at her with a dismayed expression. At far right, a placard in the shape of a book features a seated commoner holding a sickle. Actors stroll in front of the signs, wearing informal summer kimono, chatting and exchanging glances. The left panel shows actors Matsumoto Koshiro, Iwai Hanshiro (shown twice), Arashi Yoshisaburo, Nakamura Tsuruzo, and Bando Kamezo. The right panel includes Nakamura Utaemon, Kataoka Nizaemon, Ichimura Uzaemon, Ogami Kikujiro, and two unidentified actors. A fascinating look at actors both on and offstage, detailed with expressive figures.
