Series; The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido by Two Brushes

Sakanoshita: The Brush-discarding Mountain and the Eighty Rapids - Lively kabuki scene by Toyokuni III in the foreground depicting Kataoka Nizaemon VIII as Akogi no Heiji fighting with Hirogawara Jirozo. Heiji was fishing in prohibited waters sacred to a temple to catch a fish needed to cure his mother's illness. Instead, he pulled up a precious sword in his net. Jirozo, who was also a poacher, caught him and the pair struggled over the treasure. Here, Heiji holds the sword wrapped in red cloth and the fishing net under his arm, waving his arm above his head. Jirozo charges him with his head, hoping to knock him down. The inset above by Hiroshige shows the rapids below the Brush-discarding Mountain, the water dotted with stones. Travelers pause at a tea stand atop the hill at right, enjoying a view of the rugged peak across the valley. Attractively detailed and shaded. A variant edition with a colored background.
