Soga Goro Gallops Bareback to Oiso, 1885

Comments - Fantastic Yoshitoshi triptych depicting the impetuous Sogo Goro galloping bareback at full speed to Oiso to help his older brother, Sogo Juro. Goro had a dream that his sibling was in trouble, and reacted by trying to reach him as soon as possible. Leaning forward and whipping the steed with a bamboo branch, Juro urges his horse on, grasping the striped reins with his other hand. The plain background focuses all the attention on the horse and rider. A marvelous image capturing the strength and speed of the horse with deft calligraphic line work. A terrific, bold design.

An Exceptionally Rare Reprint - This triptych is a mid-20th century reprint of Yoshitoshi’s original. It is a very rare reprint and this is the only time we have offered it for sale. It is a beautifully printed woodblock reprint with fine color and detail, printed on a quality handmade paper. It would make a terrific large display or nice addition of a rare triptych to a collection.
