Comments - Terrific kabuki scene from the play "Chiyo no Haru Tosa-e no Saya-ate" of the courtesan Katsuragi and two visitors on a verandah. The visitors are actually sworn enemies Nagoya Sanza and Fuwa Banzaemon. Sanza was banished by his clan after a valuable scroll in his care was stolen by the evil Banzaemon. The beauty kneels at right, holding her hand to her forehead in a rather distressed manner as she looks down, a pipe in her other hand. In the center, Banzaemon scratches his head with a puzzled expression, looking back over his shoulder at Sanza. His black robe is burnished with a beautiful pattern of swirling clouds, and his swords rest on the floor behind him. At left, Sanza looks up with a slight frown as he leans on his sword. A blossoming cherry tree frames the scene against a softly shaded blue sky. A lovely triptych with attractive color and embossed detail in the white kimono collar.
