Comments - Dramatic kabuki scene from the play "Na ni Takashi Mariuta Jitsuroku" of Matsudaiya Shirobei and Toheiji during a struggle. At bottom the samurai Matsudaiya Shirobei pushes away the panels of a folding screen as it collapses around him. Between his teeth he grips a makeshift knife made of a short length of sharpened bamboo. Behind him, the grim-faced Toheiji grips a sword, looking down with a frown, the sleeves of his striped brown kimono tied back with a sash. The family crest on his shoulders features an octopus, an interesting detail. From top to bottom, the actors are Nakamura Kantaro and Ichikawa Kodanji IV. An interesting subject.
