Series; Butterflies and Plovers Kill Ten
Ichikawa Sadanji I as Ichikawa Betto Jiro, 1868 - Great kabuki portrait of Ichikawa Sadanji I as Ichikawa Betto Jiro in the midst of a fight, gripping his sword above his head as a small pot of ashes hurled at him flies past above. A tattered sheet of folded papers is caught over his shoulders, a few straight lines of rain falling down through the night sky. A dynamic design, nicely composed and detailed. The butterflies and plovers of the title refers to the motifs worn by the famous Soga brothers: butterflies for Goro and plovers for Juro.
