Genpei: Snow, Moon, Flowers, 1885

Comments - Fantastic image of the famed warrior Sato Tadanobu battling Yokawa Kakuhan in the snow at Yoshino Temple on Mt. Yoshino. Wearing his master Yoshitsune's armor, the disguised samurai leapt from the balcony of the shrine to fight the warrior monk Kakuhan, allowing Yoshitsune to escape safely. Here, the samurai boldly slices through the wooden handle of his enemy's spear, his opponent tumbling backwards onto the gray, kicking up clumps of snow with his flailing arms and legs. The broken pieces of the weapon go flying as Tadanobu lunges forward, the shoulder and leg plates of his armor moving with his notion. Kakuhan's men rush up the slope at right, brandishing weapons and grimacing with rage. Tall pine tree frames the scene, with the red temple building behind standing out beautifully against the white snow. An incredible design, detailed with burnishing in the armor and soft bokashi shading in the sky.
