Genji Reflects on the Blossoms at Night, 1861

Comments - Terrific scene of Prince Genji admiring the cherry blossoms from the verandah of a palace at night. He wears a fantastic coat patterned with a dragon and dark clouds over a pale blue kimono with a gray and white center band. A beauty climbs up the stairs at right with a cushion in hand, while a young girl at left mixes ink on a stone. The woman seated beside her looks down at her with a fond smile, her hair adorned with decorative hairpins and ribbons. A beautiful garden stretches out behind them, with stone lanterns dotting the shore of a lake, the view framed by flowering trees. A lovely design with wonderful detail in the elegant fabrics and setting, including burnishing and embossing.
