Beauties Performing a Play, 1859

Comments - Charming scene of beauties performing a play. Using a low wooden platform as a stage, a shirabyoshi dancer gracefully waves her fan in a scene from the play commonly known as "Musume Dojoji." She dances about under a large temple bell with cherry blossoms overhead, two other women taking the parts of monks. A matron kneels at right next to wooden clappers on a board, while at lower left, candles are extended on a small wooden tray to light the actors. A princess and a young girl seated on the floor watch happily, while, musicians provide accompaniment on shamisen at left. An attractive design with a wonderfully detailed setting.
