Samurai Standing atop a Giant Stone Rat, 1861

Comments - Intriguing scene of a samurai standing atop a stone sculpture of a giant rat, holding a banner between his hands. He looks over his shoulder with a worried frown at a kneeling beauty, who watches him suspiciously out of the corners of her eyes. At left, a man eavesdrops from behind a stage curtain, his face partially hidden by the dotted cloth wrapped around his head and a cloth parcel in his outstretched hand. The back of the stage features a handsome natural setting of trees among rocks against a night sky. A fascinating design, nicely detailed.
