Series; Comparisons of the Five Elements, 1852
Comparisons of the Five Elements - Toyokuni III's rarely seen 1852 series "Comparisons of the Five Elements" pairs kabuki portraits with the five elements from Chinese philosophy: metal, wood, water, fire, and earth. There are two prints for each of the elements, one male and one a female character. These terrific designs feature large expressive figures in the foreground with a landscape background set against the evening sky. Wonderfully detailed, these bold images are a great choice for a collector interested in kabuki prints.
