Beauties Dressed as Street Knights, 1858

Comments - Interesting kabuki double portrait of Ichikawa Dannosuke V as Maboroshi no Ocho and Nakamura Tsuruzo I as Mikazuki Osen. The two women are shown as otokodate or street knights, a traditionally male role. Each carries a single sword, and a shakuhachi flute is visible above the seated woman's back. She grimaces up at the young beauty, who smiles happily as she adjusts the towel over her shoulder. Nicely detailed with soft shading on the kimono and background, and embossing on the white kimono collars.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 14" x 9 5/8"

Condition - This print with nice detail as shown. Backed with paper. Small mark on face. Please see photos for details.
