Series; A Modern Pictorial Version of the Buddha's Eight-fold Path

Dog, Elderly Nobleman, and Young Samurai with a Chest, 1860 - Interesting design from an unusual Kunisada II series featuring modern comparisons with episodes from the life of Buddha. In this scene, an elderly nobleman grimaces angrily, throwing his hand out at his side in alarm. The young samurai at right stares back at him as he reaches for his sword, a wooden chest tucked under his arm. A large white dog can be seen at left, its leash trailing on the grass beneath the nobleman's feet. A blossoming cherry tree frames the scene. An intriguing subject with expressive figures, nicely detailed with embossing on the dog's fur and faint embossing on the blossoms. The first time we've seen this subject.
