Scene from Katakiuchi ama no hashidate, 1860

Comments - Attractive scene from the kabuki play "Katakiuchi ama no hashidate" of three beauties in an interior. At left, the courtesan Kikunoi smiles as she looks up from the long letter she is reading. She wears a plaid kimono bordered with her namesake chrysanthemums (kiku) over a red under robe, tied with a red obi that reverses to plum. In the center, the beauty Shinzo Mitsuhama offers an ornate pipe to her companion, the courtesan Kaoru. She stares back at her with a strange grimace, holding a sheer silk fan to her chest. Her outer robe features yellow mountain roses and flowing water. A handsome design.
