Scene from Sannin Kichisa Kuruwa no Hatsugai, 1860

Comments - Interesting scene from the kabuki play "Sannin Kichisa Kuruwa no Hatsugai" of the beauty and petty criminal Ojo Kichisa crossing swords with the ronin Obo Kichisa inside the courtyard of a mansion. The beauty stares at her opponent with a grim frown, one sleeve of her black floral kimono pushed down to reveal a red obi patterned with diamonds and blossoms. Obo scowls angrily as he tucks up the back of his robe for easier movement. A blossoming plum tree frames the night sky above. From left, the actors are Iwai Kumesaburo III and Kawarazaki Gonjuro I. A handsome design with an attractive setting.
