Tobacco Seller outside a Shrine, 1857

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene of the tobacco seller Sashichi, the beauty Ofusa, and Omatsuri Sashichi outside the stone wall of a shrine. The vendor kneels on the ground at left with his hands on his chest of tobacco, looking up with strange grin at Omatsuri Sashichi, who is twisting the arm of a man behind him. At left, Ofusa looks down with a smile, seemingly unaware of the conflict going on at right. She wears a black kimono patterned with chrysanthemums tied with a light blue print obi, her hair adorned with a lacquer comb, clusters of flowers, and ribbons. From left, the actors are Onoe Kikujiro II, Nakamura Fukusuke I, and Ichikawa Ichizo III. Nice expressive figures.

Image Size - 13 7/8" x 19 1/8"
