Original Kunisada II (1823 - 1880) Japanese Woodblock Print
Scene from Ehon Taikoki, 1865

Comments - Terrific kabuki scene from the play "Ehon Taikoki," a drama about Takechi Mitsuhide, who betrayed his master, Oda Harunaga. Here, Mitsuhide emerges from the foliage at left outside the home of his son, Jujiro, and Jujiro's wife, Hatsugiku, lifting his hat for a better look as he stares at the young couple inside. At right, Jujiro looks up with a wary grimace as he eyes the beauty, holding a sword upright at his side. She tilts her head with a worried frown, gesturing towards her father-in-law with her sleeves. Her elegant kimono is patterned with chrysanthemums and trimmed with bows, and clusters of flowers adorn her hair. A handsome colorful design.
