Comments - Great kabuki portrait of Nakamura Fukusuke I as Enya Hangan in the famous play about the 47 ronin, "Kanadehon Chushingura." Here, Lord Hangan grimaces with rage as Lord Moronao insults him while at the Imperial Palace. Unable to take the abuse any longer, Hangan attacks Moronao with his sword, a capital offense that results in him committing seppuku and his retainers vowing to avenge his death. He wears a yellow vest over a purple kimono, his crossed feather crest visible on the shoulders and sleeves. A rolled up blind hangs overhead. A nice large expressive figure, detailed with faint embossing on the white kimono collar.
