Comments - Terrific triptych depicting the famous warrior Sato no Tadanobu, a loyal retainer of Yoshitsune, fighting for his life. After a former mistress betrayed his hiding place, he used a go board to defend himself against more than 200 policemen attacking him. He struggles with two opponents on the verandah of the house, a clawed weapon flying through the air beside him. Three enemies are piled in a heap at the foot of the verandah, struck down by as single go board, playing pieces scattered all around them. A nobleman on horseback waits in the courtyard, pointing his fan, accompanied by additional policemen carrying flaming torches. The moon rises behind a plum tree in the pale gray evening sky. A fantastic depiction of what is probably the most famous legend involving a go board.
