Original Shogetsu (active circa 1880 - 1890) Japanese Woodblock Print
Visit to Nikko

Comments - Handsome triptych depicting the shogun's procession paying a visit to Toshogu Shrine at Nikko, the site dedicated to the founder of the Tokugawa Shogunate, Tokugawa Ieyasu. Dressed in formal court robes and caps, the noblemen walk solemnly along the stone path towards the steps to the entrance gate housing two guardian statues. Retainers line the walkway, bowing respectfully as the group passes. Lovely architectural detail in the colorful, ornate buildings, which feature carved panels and tile roofs. Pine trees line the horizon under the softly shaded sky. A terrific design with vibrant color and delicate burnished patterns in the black robes at center.
