Original Kunisada III (1848 - 1920) Japanese Woodblock Print
Kumagai Naozane and Taira no Atsumori

Comments - Interesting kabuki triptych divided diagonally to feature two scenes. At right, the Minamoto warrior Kumagai Naozane has captured the young samurai Taira no Atsumori during the Battle of Ichi-no-Tani. He grimaces with rage as he grabs Atsumori by the wrist, his hair sticking out wildly around his face. Atsumori tilts his head with a sly smile, prepared to die even though it is his first battle. The image at left shows an elderly priest or monk with a wooden chest on his back, frowning unhappily as he looks up at a red-faced samurai. Nice large colorful figures, detailed with a beautiful burnished pattern on the black kimono and embossing on the elderly priest's white hair.

Artist - Kunisada III (1848 - 1920)

Image Size - 14" x 27 3/8"

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three separate panels, backed with paper. Vertical centerfold in center panel, light vertical lines where backing papers overlap, a few stains. Please see photos for details.
